Conservation Activities

Partnership with zoos

Breeding program with JAZA

We have collaborated with zoos to pursue the following:

  • Preserving species of Tsushima Leopard Cat.
  • Extending ecological knowledge about Leopard Cats in captivity.
  • Educatin the Tsushima Leopard Cat’s endangerment.
  • Breeding Leopard Cat for re-introduction to the wild.

Following Nine Zoos are working for the breeding program. Currently there are in total 35 Tsushima Leopard Cats:

The zoos that keep Tsushima leopard cats are Nasu Animal Kingdom in Tochigi Prefecture, Inokashira Nature Park in Tokyo, Yokohama Zoo in Kanagawa Prefecture, Toyama Family Park in Toyama Prefecture, Higashiyama Zoo in Nagoya City in Aichi Prefecture, Kyoto Zoo in Kyoto Prefecture, Fukuoka Zoo in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kujuku-jima Zoo and Botanical Garden in Nagasaki Prefecture, and Okinawa Kodomonokuni in Okinawa Prefecture.

TWCC and Tsushima Leopard Cat Re-introduction center in Tsushima also keep
Tsushima Leopard Cats for educational activities, or practical studies of re-introduction project.

Preparing for Re-introduction is needed

No matter how the distribution of Tsushima Leopard Cat would expand, the risk of extinction could remain.
We continue to search the best way to supplement breeding individuals into the wild.
